Why there's a domestic violence problem among gay men in Britain

Why there's a domestic violence problem among gay men in Britain -  N asir met Will* five years ago. “He was sort of seeing someone at the time, but it was obvious that we had a very powerful connection." They became an item, but as the months changed, so too did the dynamic of their relationship. Will became controlling, even abusive. “He created an environment where I felt like an unattractive, disgusting person who wasn’t good enough for him," says Nasir. "I lost my sense of self worth.” It's a situation that is surprisingly prevalent among the gay male community. While women are almost twice as likely to be victims of domestic abuse as men, LGBT charity Stonewall says gay men are more vulnerable still: almost half (49pc) of gay and bisexual men in the UK report experiencing at least one incident of domestic abuse from a family member or partner since the age of 16.

Italy one of the worst countries in Western Europe for gay rights: report

Image
Italy one of the worst countries in Western Europe for gay rights: report - That made Italy one of the worst countries in Western Europe in terms of gay rights. However, its ranking of 32nd out of 49 countries was an increase of three places from the 2016 ranking, when it scored just 20 percent. One of the key reasons for the improved score was the passing of a bill allowing gay unions in May 2016, said ILGA-Europe, which wrote the report. But the removal of a stepchild adoption clause, and fierce opposition to the bill even in its watered-down state, meant that many rights campaigners were far from satisfied, and the report criticized "divisive, derogatory language about same- sex couples and their children from parliamentarians who opposed the bill".

Bertho Makso, director of Proud Lebanon, said the week marked a watershed in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender life, despite the threatened violence and some local opposition.
