Trump's nominated Army Secretary says anti-LGBT policies are just 'politics'

Trump's nominated Army Secretary says anti- LGBT policies are just 'politics' - Eric Fanning made history when Barack Obama nominated him as the United States Secretary of the Army in May last year, making history as the first out man to head a military branch. However, Mr Fanning was turfed out of his job when Donald Trump took office, with billionaire hockey club owner Vincent Viola serving in the interim role. Tennessee state senator Mark Green was nominated for the role by Trump, a strongly anti-LGBT Republican lawmaker, to fill the role full-time.

UK technology firms turn to Silicon Valley to ward off Brexit blues

UK technology firms turn to Silicon Valley to ward off Brexit blues - Theresa May’s article 50 letter might have dominated the front pages in Britain but it was met with a shrug in San Francisco, where 30 tech leaders from the north of England recently embarked on a four-day mission to woo, impress and tempt cash from Silicon Valley’s top dealmakers. Anxiety over the future of Britain outside Europe has not, it seems, spread to the home of Facebook, Twitter and Google. “Investors here just don’t know what Brexit means yet,” said Gerald Brady, managing director of the multibillion-dollar lender Silicon Valley Bank. However, that is not stopping EU27 countries from making furtive attempts to lure British entrepreneurs overseas.

Public opposed to reducing international student numbers - poll

Public opposed to reducing international student numbers - poll - The most recent net migration statistics covering the year to September 2016 put long-term student immigration at 134,000, down 23%. Amid a Cabinet split over whether international students should be counted in the official migration statistics, the survey found only a quarter of people thought of them as immigrants. Boris Johnson and Liam Fox are among those to oppose including those coming for education from the figures, while Philip Hammond said the recording system should reflect “public perception”. But Downing Street has ruled out a change in the way they are recorded, and Amber Rudd has suggested she wants to reduce the number of foreign students as part of efforts to cut immigration.

Thirty-two percent fall in Israelis studying in Britain

Thirty-two percent fall in Israelis studying in Britain - The figures from the Higher Education Statistics Authority show the biggest fall has taken place since 2010-11 when there were still 595 students. Among first year students, the numbers dropped from 260 to 200 over that eight-year period. The pattern emerged amid concern about anti-Israel protests on campus and cases of Israeli speakers being prevented from speaking. UK Ambassador David Quarrey acknowledged that some Israelis are “probably deterred” from coming to the UK to study by much-publicised incidents.

Homophobic crime continues to rise in the UK's capital - There are, on average around 6 anti-LGBT offences being recorded every day on London’s streets, a 9.63% increase year on year. In total, 2037 crimes were reported for the year 2016/17 compared to 1861 crimes in 2015 /16 and 1559 in 2014/15. However, the Metropolitan Police service was keen to point out that the crime rates were lower than five years ago and these current statistics are set against the gruelling austerity measures and “ significant reductions in resources”  set out by this current government.
