Top words of 2016: From ' Brexit ' to 'post-truth' - 'Brexit', 'post-truth', 'surreal', 'xenophobia' and 'paranoid' reflected the developments of the year as these terms were adopted or used for a recognisable phenomenon or experience and were adjudged the top words of 2016 by various dictionaries. Oxford Dictionaries named as its word of the year 'post-truth' — an adjective defined as 'relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief'.

LGBT individuals more likely to be incarcerated -  Meyer and colleagues drew data from the 2011-2012 National Inmate Survey, which interviewed a representative sample of people in U.S. prisons and jails. Their analysis found that rates of incarceration for lesbian, gay and bisexual people were 1,882 per 100,000. That is more than three times the “already high” incarceration rate of 612 per 100,000 U.S. population, the authors write in the American Journal of Public Health.
