- 'Brexit', 'post-truth', 'surreal', 'xenophobia' and 'paranoid' reflected the developments of the year as these terms were adopted or used for a recognisable phenomenon or experience and were adjudged the top words of 2016 by various dictionaries. Oxford Dictionaries named as its word of the year 'post-truth' — an adjective defined as 'relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief'.
